Books

My books make connections between humans and nature by showing the many things we have in common with other species, from family dynamics to a shared evolutionary past. Ultimately, my aim is to inspire a broad audience to identify with and care for the natural world. There are now French, German, Spanish and Catalan translations.

In my second book, I explicitly try to democratize science and natural history by highlighting community science and work by non-white and non-male scientists.

Reviews

“This book is a timely reminder of the damage that humans can cause to the birds' environment.”

“The coverage of Bird Love is extensive…I was surprised by how much information was delivered in an accessible fashion.”

“I found the book fascinating: it's the type of book which can intensely annoy other people because you're constantly telling them about what you're reading...”

—Peter Magee, The BookBag

BBC Wildlife

“Bird Love will bring any reader to more deeply appreciate the hidden complexity of birds.”

—Corina Newsome, BBC Wildlife

“…a beautifully designed book on an endlessly fascinating topic.”

—Matt Mendenhall, Birdwatching Magazine

“An authoritative look at the similar ways that humans and birds have evolved similar solutions to meet our common survival needs.”

—Bill Beren, Jersey Sierran, the quarterly publication of Sierra Club's New Jersey Chapter

"[A] fascinating book."

—Marc Bekoff, Animal Emotions

“Mountains and years of scientific research are gathered together here…”

—Julie Zickefoose, Wall Street Journal

“What struck me most from this wonderful book is that nature, even within one family is extraordinary diverse. Mating, pairing and offspring rearing is as varied in the avian world as in the human realm, maybe even more so. The breadth of knowledge of the author is displayed on every page and is really well presented. Its entirely admirable that someone should know as much as they do with a depth of scientific understanding yet be able to convey that to the lay reader, succinctly, accurately and readably. I’m still reading and re-reading and have been charmed, captivated and entertained, but mostly greatly educated by this work. It gets my highest recommendation.”

Fat Birder

“…clearly a work worthy of attention by ornithologists, birdwatchers, and general naturalists alike.”

—Johannes E. Riutta, The Well-Read Naturalist

“I have enjoyed this book very much. The main reason is the author’s approach, which, I agree 100%. Let’s get to know the bird by knowing how it lives.”

—H.J. Ruiz, Avian 101

“…showcasing the astonishing variety of courtship techniques, mating behaviour and parenting lives of birds around the world.”

Gardens Illustrated

"[Combines] vignettes with photographs and drawings to paint an eye-opening picture of the myriad ways birds act."

—Alisa Opar, Audubon

“…a contribution that will remain valuable long after academic theorists have moved on to other topics of debate.”

—Joan Roughgarden, American Birding Association
